“Sarah has that rare ability to provide a compassionate and safe environment, combined with a willingness to highlight the truth of a situation, even when it is hard. She brings a strong Christian conviction that change for the better is possible in Christ, while acknowledging that it takes a willing and open heart on the part of the client(s). She is one of the best at this complicated and delicate task I have ever seen.”
— Dr. John Martz, Senior Pastor (Retired)
I love my kids. I love my husband. My best days are filled with the people I love, spending time with Jesus, teaching, cooking good food, being outside, and laughing with my friends and family. These are the most important things about me. My work, my family, and my faith let me be a helper in my community and I’m so grateful for them all.
I share this joy and passion in my work as a marriage and family therapist. When I meet with clients, I am struck by the commonality of the human experience. Whether it is helping young women figure out their next steps in life, single mothers, children dealing with divorce, men, and women with addiction issues, or teens with behavioral and mood disorders -- all are seeking peace. We share the same plight, fighting to heal, to hear that we matter, and to know that there is something greater we can lean on when we feel alone. I am passionate about sharing the truth of the Gospel from a chair where grace is extended in droves. From my first classes in graduate school, through my internship, and now in my private practice, I have been privy to many painful and wonderful processes. I count it a privilege to walk with individuals and families when they come to counseling for guidance.
Over the last 20 years, I have worked with families in my private practice, women in ministry, congregations, our local schools, and now at Colorado Christian University as a professor in the psychology department. In 2019, I added a Christian Registered Yoga Faith Certification to my resume, and I frequently use that in a clinical setting with the many athletes I see in my practice. I am also in the last semester of my PhD research and dissertation, and will have a doctorate in performance psychology in the summer of 2025.
I am committed to engaging in the process of helping those who are struggling with mental health issues and being a bridge that connects them in their community, church, and therapy. When leading groups or speaking at women's events, I hope to communicate that we are all worth pursuing mental and emotional health because we are made in the image of a God who loves us wholly and deeply. There are many levels of understanding mental health that require a professional, and I hope to be a conduit of that ongoing conversation between the Church and her beloved people.

WORSHIP
“There are many worship leaders out there who have ability. There are many that have heart. I believe it is a rare and beautiful thing when the two come together in one individual. Sarah Bontrager is one of those people who possesses both. When Sarah leads, her heart for the Lord and worship are evident in an amazing way. Sarah leads with an amazing voice, but in a humble way that takes the focus off of herself and puts it on Jesus.”
— Kelsie Elfrink- Head Worship Pastor
If I had a favorite way of connecting with God, it would be through leading worship. Over the last 20 years, I have learned that the privilege of worshiping with a group of believers is sacred at the very least, and a glimpse of heaven at its best. My journey to becoming a worship leader has been wonderful and long-standing, and it continues with opportunities to grow and to be challenged by musicians far more talented than myself. From worship leaders and congregations in Denver, Nashville, Indianapolis and back to Denver again, I have learned from some of the best. It is imperative to listen to the Holy Spirit, lead the people well and be a conduit. Practice your craft, pray a lot and enjoy the gift of helping believers draw near to the One who adores them. There is healing in worship; God is honored and we are changed.
I have lead worship for a variety of weekend women's conferences, small Bible studies, and during traditional and contemporary services on Sunday mornings. I comfortable leading in a wide variety of styles and really enjoy working with a team of musicians. Your group or church may have musicians, and I am happy to plan a retreat or event with that team. I also lead alongside very talented women here in Denver, and would love to bring them with me to your event if needed!
